Questions People Actually Ask.

Including the ones with uncomfortable answers. Where something depends on your policy, your plan or your tax situation, you will see that said plainly rather than smoothed over.

The basics

About Troy and the Basics

What kind of professional is Troy?

Troy is a licensed, LUTCF-credentialed insurance professional — a fact-finder who deals in assets, not a salesperson chasing a quota. His role is to help you understand whether an Indexed Universal Life strategy fits your goals, working alongside attorneys and CPAs so you get an unbiased, complete picture.

What exactly are “living benefits”?

They are optional provisions on a life insurance policy that may allow you to access a portion of the death benefit while you are still living, after a qualifying event. Access and amounts depend on your policy and on that event, and are subject to policy terms — not every applicant will qualify. Our living benefits page walks through how they work.

Will you promise me a specific rate of return?

No. No specific rate of return, growth, income or savings amount is guaranteed, and anyone promising you one is worth walking away from. What a contract does guarantee is written in the contract, and reading that with you is part of the job.

I have a 401(k) from a former employer (or a current one and I'm over 59½) — what are my options?

That depends on your plan document and your employment status, which is why it gets read rather than assumed. One thing worth stating plainly: a 401(k) does not roll directly into an indexed universal life policy. What is actually available to you is something to work through with Troy and your own tax professional together.

The process

About the Consultation Itself

How long is the consultation, and is there any cost?

Complimentary 10–15 minute consultation. No pressure, no obligation. It is a conversation about what you are trying to protect, not a presentation.

Is there a minimum to get started?

There is no minimum to have the conversation — that part is complimentary. The qualification survey does have one: the current qualification criteria include the ability to comfortably commit $300/month for at least 12 months. Whether a particular policy has requirements beyond that depends on the carrier and the policy, and Troy will tell you what those are before you apply for anything.

What happens on the first call?

Troy asks what you are trying to protect and what you already have in place. Nothing is recommended on a first call, because nothing should be recommended before the fact-find is done.

Do I need to prepare anything?

No. If you happen to have details of existing coverage or an employer plan to hand, they help — but the call is useful without them, and gathering them can be the outcome rather than the prerequisite.

Do you work with my accountant or attorney?

Yes, and by preference. Troy works as a fact-finder alongside attorneys and CPAs rather than around them, so anything with a tax or legal consequence goes to your professional rather than being answered off the cuff.

Will you tell me if I do not need anything?

Yes. Troy has been explicit that an indexed universal life policy is a poor fit for plenty of people. If what you have is doing the job, that is what you will hear.

What areas do you serve?

Consultations are held virtually, so you do not need to be nearby — but your state does matter. Services and product conversations are limited to states where the appropriate licensing and availability requirements are met, which is why the qualification survey asks which state you live in before anything else. Whether a particular policy is available to you also depends on the carrier and on your state, and that gets confirmed before anything is applied for.
